During 1987 and 1988, an Indian television series set a high record for most viewership during that time. This series was aired on DD national and was called Ramayan. It's an adaptation of the ancient epic, in which the exiled Prince Rama and his brother Laxman set out to save Rama's wife, Sita, who has been kidnapped by the demon king of Lanka Ravana.

Description – Adapted and based on the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana, the series follows the journey of Rama who goes to an exile of 14 years along with Sita and Lakshman.

It became so famous that it earned 40 lakh per episode at that time. During covid-19 lockdowns, this series was re-aired on DD national and it again became one of the most-watched shows.

What is interesting about this piece of work is that they have added visuals to the oral stories. Giving a form and structure to an epic character, this series sets standards for how a character is perceived by the masses given their reach. Ravana is portrayed as a demon with hideous laughter and no respect for anyone other than himself.
